Dental Implants – What are they and how do they help?

Dental Implants replace the roots of your natural teeth with metal or ceramic material, and artificial teeth are set atop the implants. Dental implants hold artificial teeth firmly onto the jaw, allowing the powerful feel and function of a natural tooth.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction — Why do it?

Serious problems can develop from impacted teeth, such as infection, damage to other teeth and bone, or a cyst, and wisdom tooth extraction is done either to correct a current problem or to prevent future ones.

Problems that can occur when wisdom teeth come in include:

• Jaws may be too small to allow for wisdom teeth, causing the teeth to become impacted & unable to break through gums.
• Wisdom teeth may only break partway through your gums, causing a flap of gum tissue to grow over them which traps food and germs and makes gums red, swollen, painful and infected.
• One or more wisdom teeth may come in at an angle, with the top of the tooth facing forward, backward, or to one side.

Wisdom tooth removal can often be effective in preventing gum disease and tooth decay, as wisdom teeth can be harder to clean than other teeth, or in the teeth and jaw in the area of the wisdom tooth.

Gum Grafting Oral Surgery – Can it reduce sensitivity?

A gum graft, also called gingival graft or periodontal plastic surgery, is a generic name for any of a number of periodontal surgical procedures in which the gum tissue is grafted to cover exposed teeth root surfaces.  Exposed tooth roots can be heat and cold sensitive and unaesthetic, so a small layer of tissue can be removed from the palate of the patient’s mouth and relocated to the site of gum recession where it is sutured (stitched) into place.  This serves to protect the exposed root with living tissue, and the donor site will heal over a period of time without damage.
